In February 2007, the New Zealand Chinese Association (NZCA) held its inaugural Youth Leadership Camp at Eastern Beach in Auckland. The event in Auckland was attended by 42 people from around New Zealand and was considered to be a very successful event by both its delegates and organisers.
The success and momentum was carried on in Wellington this year and as a result the conference is now a “must do” on the NZCA events calendar. Currently, the event alternates between these two main centres (Auckland and Wellington) every year. With the experience of past organisers and the vision of young leaders, NZCA is proud to support the next Leadership and Development Conference (LDC) to be held in February 2009.
ObjectiveA national initiative, the New Zealand Chinese Associations’ Leadership and Development Conference is a "live-in" seminar for people between the ages of 18 and 30 and aims to provide a fun, relevant and effective training experience that will enable young leaders to understand their unique identity as Chinese New Zealanders.
The emphasis of this conference is to investigate and promote the necessary structures and values required for the New Zealand Chinese community to take an active, cohesive and valuable part in the future of New Zealand. The delegates that attend this conference will be the future leaders of the New Zealand Chinese community and it is the intention of the organising committee to create: “Leaders that create the future”
The NZCA LDC will be a place for delegates to understand and realise their potential, throughout a 5 ½ day conference that will involve a range of activities and guest speakers.
The conference offers an environment that allows delegates to acquire leadership and communication skills so that they can better serve their community, country and place of work as well as providing them with a better understanding of their Chinese heritage and the importance of their role in New Zealand’s multicultural society.
Accomplished guests from around New Zealand of various backgrounds will present their valuable knowledge on how to get the leadership edge in today’s society. The date for the conference will be during the 1st to 6th February 2009 and is aimed at Chinese people who have an interest in making a positive impact on the local Chinese community within Aotearoa and subsequently enrich their outlook on life both personally and professionally.
This conference is aimed at Chinese people between the ages of 18-30 years who are interested in developing their leadership skills, providing inspiration and practical life skills as well as learning about their heritage with respect to Chinese in New Zealand.
ProgrammeThe varied programme will include presentations, indoor and outdoor leadership activities, as well as group and panel discussions. A wide range of topics and presenters is a feature of the conference, together with eminent and high achieving presenters who will also be on discussion forums relevant to participation and leadership development.
A special feature of the conference is where each delegate will undergo Myers-Briggs Testing prior to the conference so that a personal profile can be presented once they arrive.
A leadership project will also be undertaken by the delegates throughout the week culminating in a presentation to a panel of distinguished guests.
The varied residential programme will provide an environment in which our young people can develop their leadership, teamwork and communication skills.
The programme will include:
• Leadership through understanding, including an individual Myers Briggs assessment • Practical life skills • Leadership through understanding, wisdom and perspective – what New Zealand Chinese gained through the history of Chinese in New Zealand and our multiple identity as Chinese Kiwis • Leadership in the community and in business • Leadership in action and sport • Leadership through team work • Building lifelong friendships with like-minded individuals
Affiliation to NZCAIn order to attend the 2009 NZCA LDC in Auckland, all applicants must be a member of a branch of the NZCA. If you are not a branch member of the NZCA please contact the branch in your region. SelectionDelegates will be selected based on the spread of NZCA branches around New Zealand. This selection system ensures participants cover the geographical spread of New Zealand Chinese. The common denominator is that delegates are selected because they have leadership potential and/or skills. The Leadership and Development Conference is a great opportunity for NZCA’s branches to collectively recognise, support and inspire worthy young people from our local communities and to provide skills to enhance their futures. Each NZCA branch is invited to seek applications to attend the NZCA Leadership and Development Conference from people who meet the criteria.
Applicants must be aged between 18 and 30 as at 1st January 2009.
The standard application form must be completed in full by each applicant and also endorsed by the applicant’s NZCA branch.
Branches will then forward applications (electronic or hardcopy) to NZCA Auckland by 30th November 2008.
The NZCA Leadership and Development 2009 Organising Committee will review all applications to determine who will attend the conference. Please note that there is a maximum number of delegates who can participate, which may cause some applications to be declined.
Successful applicants will be notified early December as will any unsuccessful applicants. An information pack will be provided to all attendees at least one week prior to conference commencement. Each NZCA branch will be required to contribute $100 for each attendee as NZCA Auckland has been successful this year in obtaining funding from the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust for the majority of the costs.
ConclusionThe organising committee are looking forward to the conference and the opportunities that it brings. This is a great chance for people of like-minds to meet, network and learn from each other. We look forward to meeting you all.
