LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE 2010

January 24th – 29th  2010

Wellesley Country Club | Upper Hutt

Applications close 30 November 2009

Information Sheet for Applicants

BACKGROUND:

In February 2007, the New Zealand Chinese Association (NZCA) held its inaugural Youth Leadership Camp at Eastern Beach in Auckland.

The last two years this event, now renamed the NZ Chinese Association Leadership & Development Conference (NZCA LDC) has gained momentum and support from the NZCA branches and is a permanent fixture on the annual NZCA calendar of events.

The 2010 conference will be held in Wellington in late January of 2010 and will once again focus on inspiring young Chinese to be the best they can be.

OBJECTIVE:

The New Zealand Chinese Associations’ Leadership & Development Conference is a NZCA National initiative "live-in" seminar for people between the ages of 18 and 28 and aims to provide a fun, relevant and effective training experience that will enable young leaders to understand their unique identity as Chinese New Zealanders.

The emphasis of this Conference is to investigate and promote the necessary structures and values required for the New Zealand Chinese Community to take an active, cohesive and valuable part in the future of New Zealand, including the formulation of a succession management plan for the next 2 generations within its own community.

The delegates that attend this Conference will be the future leaders of the New Zealand Chinese Community and it is the intention of the organising committee to:

“Create leaders that will create the Future”

The NZCA Leadership & Development Conference will be a place for delegates to understand and realise their potential, throughout a 5 ½ day conference that will involve a range of activities and guest speakers.

The Conference will offer an environment that will allow delegates to acquire leadership and communication skills so that they can better serve their community, country and place of work as well as providing them with a better understanding of their Chinese heritage and the importance of their role in New Zealand’s multicultural society.

Accomplished guests from around NZ of various backgrounds will present valuable knowledge on how to get the leadership edge in today’s society.

The date for the conference will be 24th – 29th January 2010 and is aimed at Chinese people who have an interest in making a positive impact on the local Chinese community within Aotearoa and subsequently enrich their outlook on life both personally and professionally.

This conference is aimed at Chinese people between the ages of 18-28* years who are interested in developing their leadership skills while providing some inspiration and practical life skills as well as learning about their heritage with respect to Chinese in New Zealand.

PROGRAMME:

The varied programme will include presentations, indoor & outdoor activities, as well as group and panel discussions.

A wide range of topics and presenters is a feature of the Conference, together with eminent and high achieving presenters who will also be on discussion forums relevant to participation and leadership development.

A special feature of the conference is where each delegate will undergo Myers-Briggs Testing prior to the conference so that a personal profile can be presented once they arrive.

A leadership project will also be undertaken by the delegates throughout the week culminating in a presentation to a panel of distinguished guests.

The varied residential programme will provide an environment in which our young people can develop their leadership, teamwork and communication skills.

The programme will include:

  • Leadership through understanding , including an individual Myers Brigg assessment
  • Practical Life Skills , ie – how to write a CV that will get you an interview
  • Leadership through understanding, wisdom and perspective – what N Z Chinese gained through the history of Chinese in New Zealand and our multiple entity as Chinese Kiwis
  • Leadership in the Community and in Business
  • Leadership in action and sport
  • Leadership through Team Work

The Conference will provide an opportunity to mix and mingle with other New Zealand Chinese while providing the tools and experiences to provide a further learning platform for working positively into the future, our community, and the wider world.

AFFILIATION TO NZCA:

In order to participate at the 2010 Wellington NZCA LDC – ALL applicants must be a member of a branch of the NZ Chinese Association. If you are not a member of a branch of the NZCA please contact the branch in your region listed below for more information on how to join.

SELECTION:

Delegates will be selected based on the spread of NZ Chinese Association Branches around New Zealand.

This selection system ensures participants cover the geographical spread of New Zealand Chinese.  The common denominator is that all participants are selected because they have leadership potential and/or skills.

The Leadership & Development Conference is a great opportunity for NZCA’s branches to collectively recognise, support and inspire worthy young people from our local communities and to provide skills to enhance their futures.

Each NZCA Branch is invited to seek applications to attend the NZCA Leadership & Development Conference from people who meet the criteria.

Applicants must be aged between 18 and 28* as at 31st December 2009.

*applicants over the age of 28 are also invited to attend

The standard application form must be completed in full by each applicant and endorsed by the applicants Branch of the NZCA

Branches will forward the applicant applications to the Wellington Branch of the NZCA by no later than 1 December 2009.

Successful attendees will be notified early December as will any unsuccessful applicants.  An information pack will be provided to all attendees at least one week prior to conference commencement.

Each Branch will be required to pay a $100 attendance fee per attendee.

SUPERVISION:

WANT TO ATTEND BUT DON’T HAVE ENOUGH ANNUAL LEAVE?

We are currently working on a document for applicants to provide to their mangers / employers which may persuade them to give you a portion of the time off as training rather then annual leave.

This conference will commence over the Wellington Anniversary weekend so for those of you in the Wellington region, you will only need to seek a total of 4 days off.

For those delegates that may be attending summer school – check your calendars now and speak to your lecturers about when exams are scheduled and speak to the lecturers to see if you can work it in somehow.

If you’re still unsure – please contact one of the organisers for further details.

APPLICATION FORMS:

An application form for the 2010 conference can be downloaded from www.nzchinese.org.nz once completed, please forward to the branch secretary in your area.
