Leadership and Development Conference

 Sunday 3rd to Friday 8th February 2013

Willow Park Convention Centre

Eastern Beach, Auckland

 INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

  Background

In February 2007, the New Zealand Chinese Association (NZCA) held its inaugural Youth Leadership Camp at Eastern Beach in Auckland. The event was attended by 42 people from around New Zealand and was considered to be a very successful event by both its delegates and organizers. The conference is organised every year and is now a “must do” on the NZCA events calendar. The 2012 conference was successfully held in Palmerston North and now returns to Auckland for 2013.

With the experience of past organisers and the vision of young leaders, NZCA is proud to support the next Leadership and Development Conference (LDC) to be held in Auckland, 3rd – 8th February 2013.

 Objective

A national initiative, the New Zealand Chinese Associations' Leadership and Development Conference is a "live-in" seminar for people between the ages of 18 and 30. It aims to provide a fun, relevant and effective training experience that will enable young leaders to understand their unique identity as Chinese New Zealanders. The delegates that attend this conference will be the future leaders of New Zealand and its Chinese community; it is the intention of the organising committee to:

"Create leaders that will shape our future"

The NZCA LDC will be a place for delegates to understand and realise their potential, throughout a 5 day conference that will involve a range of activities and guest speakers. The conference offers an environment that allows delegates to acquire leadership and communication skills so that they can better serve their community, country and place of work. As well as providing them with a better understanding of their Chinese heritage and the importance of their role in New Zealand’s multicultural society. Accomplished guests from around New Zealand of various backgrounds will present their valuable knowledge on how to get the leadership edge in today’s society.  The date for the conference will be during the 3rd to 8th February 2013. It is aimed at Chinese young people, who have an interest in making a positive impact on the local Chinese community within Aotearoa and subsequently enrich their outlook on life both personally and professionally.

 Programme

The varied programme will include presentations, indoor and outdoor leadership activities, as well as group and panel discussions. A wide range of eminent and high achieving personalities will present on aspects of Leadership, Identity and Community, thus representing the theme of the 2013 conference. Delegates will also undergo an individual Personality Type assessment prior to the conference so that a personal profile can be presented once they arrive.  A leadership project will be undertaken by the delegates throughout the week culminating in a presentation to a panel of guest assessors. The programme will provide an environment in which young people can develop their leadership, teamwork and communication skills. The programme will include:

  •     Leadership through understanding, including an individual Personality type assessment
  •     Practical life skills
  •     Leadership through understanding, wisdom and perspective – what New Zealand Chinese gained through the history of Chinese in New Zealand and our multiple identity as Chinese Kiwis
  •     Leadership in the community
  •     Leadership in business
  •     Leadership in action and sport
  •     Leadership through team work
  •     Building lifelong friendships with like-minded individuals

The organising committee of NZCA LDC 2013 will review all applications to determine who will attend the conference. Please note that there is a maximum number of delegates who can participate, which may cause some applications to be declined. Applicants will be notified of the result in mid-November. An information pack will be provided to all attendees at least one week prior to conference commencement.
